📊 Stocks End August Strong, All Eyes on Jobs Report
U.S. stocks ended August strong, with the S&P 500 hitting a record above 6,500 on August 28. But momentum faded heading into Labor Day weekend as Friday’s close was flat to lower on sticky inflation data. Tech and AI stocks dipped late in the month, dragging the Nasdaq down, though the S&P still notched its fourth monthly gain.
Expect a quiet start to the week with markets closed Monday for Labor Day. Focus turns to these key events:
Tuesday: Eurozone inflation data could influence global rate expectations
Wednesday: U.S. crude inventory report may sway energy prices and inflation views
Friday: U.S. jobs report with payrolls seen up 120K and unemployment ticking down to 4.1 %, shaping Fed policy outlook
This data will shape expectations for a possible September rate cut by the Fed.

Magnificent 7 Crush Earnings Again
All seven of the “Magnificent 7”, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Tesla, and NVIDIA, have now reported results for Q2. Every single one beat Wall Street’s profit expectations, a 100% win rate versus 81% for the broader S&P 500. Looking forward, analysts expect the Magnificent 7 to keep growing, but at a slower pace.
Meanwhile, four of them, NVIDIA, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, were among the biggest profit drivers for the entire S&P 500. Some smaller players like Warner Bros. Discovery and Vertex Pharmaceuticals also showed big jumps, but mostly because they had unusually weak results in Q2 last year.
